Field research to understand the install process
To retrofit a home with a new heat pump system, installers have to carry out a heat loss survey to calculate the heat demand of their customer’s home. This means measuring all the internal dimensions of the property and recording the dimensions and positions of all doors, windows and radiators. We spent time on jobs with installers to understand the current process for carrying out these surveys and got up to speed with how to use a laser measure. Our user research provided a solid foundation for designing a better way.

Building a realistic floorplan of the property to capture room layout, dimensions and properties is at the core of the survey and the design process. We designed a floorplan canvas that is intuitive and easy to use. Our biggest challenge was that installers typically use a phone for carrying out there surveys, so the floor-planning software needed to work efficiently and effectively in the app.

An easy to use customer enquiry flow
We have designed a powerful estimation tool for new customer enquiries. This tool takes your postcode, looks up an energy performance certificate for your property and estimates the size of heat pump you might need based on the size and heat loss of the property. We have created an easy and communicative flow that guides the user through the process of confirming details of their home. We were able to achieve this ease of use, adaptability and conversion boost through multiple rounds of testing with users and iteration.

A centralised backend to respond to customer enquiries
We have led the design of the web platform that installers use on a day to day basis to manage their enquiries, respond to customers and create detailed and user friendly proposals. The platform started out as a tool to create estimates and send these to customers and grew to encompass the survey and design process. But increasingly installers are using it as a CRM to manage the entire customer relationship from initial enquiry through to installation and our new web platform reflects these needs.

After so much expansion to the fundamental feature-set of the product, it was clear that we needed to bring the website up to date. We designed and built a new site that showcases the product and elevates the Spruce brand.
